I love working with people and need to be my own boss. Can I start something with little money and build my way up? I have about a grand to put into it. I'm open to any ideas.Does anyone have any advice on starting a small business?
Don't get some big loan going. Make it pay it's way from day one.Does anyone have any advice on starting a small business?
Don't know what you can do with a grand, but I wouldn't start until I had enough in savings to pay my bills and live for 6 months. Maybe you could start something small on the side, and keep your regular job for a while. It really sucks when your business fails and you don't even have enough money for next month's rent.
Do lots of research on whatever you do find. 50% of small businesses fail in 6 months, and 80% fail after one year. 5 year is like 90%. Find out what you are getting into, first, then work your butt off. You can do it, but it isn't easy.
There are pleanty of resources online and offline to help you start your own business and write a business plan.

Do you have any business ideas?
It is good you are thinking about becoming your own boss and all that, but you need an initial plan and evaluate if starting a business is your cup of tea. Once you determine that, and if you have good ideas, try to get relatives and friends to invest in your venture (1 grand is a bit less, of course, you are the one with the ideas, so you will know). To sell your idea you will need a business plan. A business plan is good for you (it is a roadmap for you) and also to people who will be funding you (it is a message to them that you have a roadmap for you).
Of course, there are legalities like applying for your Tax Id Number with the federal gov. and registering your company with your state's Secretary of State's office.
After that you will learn on your own, as your business grows.
You can do a lot with a grand online. Go to http://ewebsmith.com for some ideas.
