What is the motivation behind peers during a business meeting giving you unsolicited advice?

A co-worker of mine constantly makes suggestions to me during meetings. It is driving me crazy! How do I potitely tell this person that I am NOT looking for suggestions. Especially since the suggestions are made in front of the group and are not very helpful. What is the motivation behind peers during a business meeting giving you unsolicited advice?
He is probably trying to impress others at the meeting. You could say, ';Please don't interrupt. I'm trying to make a point.';What is the motivation behind peers during a business meeting giving you unsolicited advice?
